03/31/2022 / Press release

The winners of this year’s Generation €uro competition are the Pet Cekinov team from Ekonomska gimnazija in srednja šola Radovljica. They received their prize at a ceremony at Banka Slovenije with Governor Boštjan Vasle, and were also invited to the closing ceremony with the president of the ECB, Christine Lagarde. To win they overcame teams from Gimnazija Franceta Prešerna Kranj, Šolski center za pošto, ekonomijo in telekomunikacije in II. Gimnazija Maribor.

The Generation €uro competition is held for school students every year by the ECB together with the national central banks of the euro area. It also represents a great opportunity for learning about the economy and for understanding the functioning of euro area policy. The purpose of the competition is to help school students learn the importance of monetary policy and price stability. At Banka Slovenije we are well aware of the importance of financial literacy, and it is the eleventh consecutive year that we have held this competition.

It has three rounds, beginning in mid-October, when the entrants tackle a quiz on monetary policy, the ECB and the Eurosystem. A total of 13 teams took part in this round of the competition in Slovenia. In the second round the competitors had to submit a written assignment on the subject Forecasting the interest rate to be announced by the ECB in March. In third and final round the five teams that performed best in the second round gave a presentation and answered questions before Banka Slovenije’s four-person jury chaired by Vice-Governor Primož Dolenc.

This year’s best team was Pet Cekinov (five ducats) from Ekonomska gimnazija in srednja šola Radovljica, consisting of students Tina Dolinar, Anemari Rihtaršič, Nika Koselj, Nina Preša and Nina Odar, under the mentorship of their teacher, Katja Polanec.

The other teams that made it through to the final round were Biznismeni (businessmen) and Finančniki (financiers), both from Gimnazija Franceta Prešerna Kranj, mentored by Irena Podpečan, Oktober from Šolski center za pošto, ekonomijo in telekomunikacije under the mentorship of Ksenija Sever Žižek, and Title from II. Gimnazija Maribor, with their mentor Lidija Kodrin. They also received prizes from Governor Boštjan Vasle. The assignments of all five teams can be found on the link.
