Help choose the theme for the designs of the new series of euro banknotes

The ECB has begun the preparations for issuing a new series of euro banknotes. The decision was made to give the new series a new look, as well as upgrading the security elements. And so as a first step we are inviting you to take part in a survey to express your opinion about the theme captured by the designs of the new banknotes.

People are invited to complete the survey on the ECB website between 10 July and 31 August of this year. You can give your opinion of the following seven themes shortlisted at the suggestion of a multidisciplinary advisory group with members from all euro area countries.

• European values mirrored in nature
• Our Europe, ourselves
• The future is yours
• Birds: free, resilient, inspiring
• Rivers: the waters of life in Europe
• Hands: together we build Europe

To ensure opinions from across the euro area are equally represented in the ongoing process of choosing the theme, field research will also be conducted to ask the same questions to a representative sample of people in all euro area countries. A final decision with regard to the theme of the next generation of banknotes is expected to be made by the Governing Council of the ECB in 2024.

This will then be followed by a design competition. European citizens will again have the chance to express their preferences on the design options resulting from that competition.

The decision on the future designs, and on when to produce and issue the new banknotes, is scheduled to be made in 2026.
