Foreign direct investment is on the rise: can we seize the opportunities?

11/12/2024 / Press release

One of the key indicators of economic development and progress is data on direct investment between Slovenia and other countries. This data is part of the balance of payments statistics provided by Banka Slovenije and made available to other institutions and companies. The most recently published data reveal that both investments in Slovenia and Slovenia's investments abroad increased by almost a tenth last year.

This data raises several important questions:
What trends can be observed over a longer period?
Which activities and which countries are the most attractive?
What does the share of foreign investment signify for the economy as a whole?

These and similar questions were addressed during a data presentation and a panel discussion today at Banka Slovenije.

Following an address by Boštjan Vasle, Governor of Banka Slovenije, Irena Drmaž, Director of the Financial Statistics Department, presented the latest data on foreign direct investment.

In the continuation of the event, Vice-Governor Marko Pahor and the panellists highlighted and commented on the state of play and conditions for cross-border investment, both from Slovenia to abroad and from abroad to Slovenia. They also touched on broader aspects of institutional arrangements, with a particular focus on the development of capital markets, business conditions and aspects of the relative strengths of individual markets. Particular attention was also given to the practical experience of companies engaged in cross-border investments.

The panel included:
Borut Jamnik, President of the Management Board of SID Banka,
Marjana Majerič, Executive Director for Strategic Development and Internationalisation of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia,
Gregor Makuc, Chief Executive Officer and Country President of Sandoz Slovenia,
Drago Kavšek, Member of the Management Board of Petrol d.d..
