Holiday season at the Banka Slovenije museum and the Mala Galerija opens with This Merry Day of Culture events
Slovenia celebrates This Merry Day of Culture every year on 3 December, the birthday of the great poet France Prešeren. To mark the occasion we will draw up a special programme at the Banka Slovenije museum, and will also open the Mala Galerija to visitors on the day.
The Banka Slovenije museum is organising two events on Tuesday, 3 December. At 1 pm we are inviting adults to take a guided tour of the museum, where we will showcase the tasks and working of the central bank, and give everyone a chance to see the most attractive exhibits, such as one of the first ATMs in Slovenia, old piggy banks and money from the Slovene lands, a chair made of shredded euro notes, and a gold bar. The guided tour lasts one hour. On This Merry Day of Culture you can also play the Atlas’s Secret virtual game at the museum, which starts at 3 pm. It is a team game suitable for adults and secondary school and university students, and for students in the last three years of primary school when accompanied by parents. We will only run the game if a sufficient number of people register (at least five, with a maximum of 15 players).
Because the number of places is limited, the two events at the Banka Slovenije museum (the guided tour for adults, and the Atlas’s Secret virtual game) both require registration in advance. Registrations are open until 1 December, can be made by emailing muzej@bsi.si. When registering, please state which event you wish to take part in, and who you are registering. Once you have registered, we will send you detailed instructions and guidance. Entrance to all events at the Banka Slovenije museum is free.
Banka Slovenije will also open the Hunt for Lost Money prize game to mark This Merry Day of Culture. The game takes place in the open air, in the immediate vicinity of the museum, and can be played any time between 3 and 15 December, which will allow us to draw and celebrate the winner in time for the holidays. You launch the game with a QR code or an online link, and then you get to move between specific points in the city with a link to the tolar, Slovenia’s first and only independent currency. You can play the game as a team or on your own, and you will need a mobile phone and about half an hour to play. We will draw three prize winners from all the players who successfully complete the game. While the prize game is running, the QR code and online link will be available on the Banka Slovenije website and via social media on Facebook and Instagram. The game also represents the Banka Slovenije museum’s involvement in the Forward to the Past project run by the Community of Museums of Slovenia.
From 20 November 2024 to 4 January 2025 the Mala Galerija will host BIO28: Project Denton, an exhibition created as part of the 28th Biennial of Design organised by the Museum of Architecture and Design in Ljubljana. Led by biennial curator Alexandra Midal, the project features students of Ljubljana’s Academy of Fine Arts and Design and the University of Art and Design in Geneva working in small groups as double agents to explore the hidden meanings of floriography, and to create floral images that express political, feminist and queer messages in a secret language.
The Mala Galerija is open to visitors between 11 am and 7 pm every Tuesday to Saturday, without any need to book.
You are most welcome to join us at the Banka Slovenije museum and at the Mala Galerija, or to take part in the prize game on the streets of Ljubljana.
